What Makes a Slewing Drive Different from a Standard Planetary Gearbox

A standard planetary gearbox transmits torque between a coaxial motor and a coaxial load — it sees torsional loading along its shaft axis and radial loading on its output shaft bearing. A slewing drive planetary gearbox assembly must simultaneously handle torque (rotational force), radial force (horizontal loads from wind, conveyor tension, or equipment weight offset), axial force (vertical loads from the weight of the driven structure), and overturning moment (bending loads from eccentric or cantilevered loads above the bearing).

The Brake Question — When Self-Locking Is Not Enough

A worm gear slewing drive is inherently self-locking — the worm gear geometry prevents back-driving when the motor is de-energised, which is why worm slewing drives are widely used in solar trackers where the holding torque requirement substantially exceeds the drive torque. A planetary slewing drive does not self-lock — a fail-safe brake (spring-applied, hydraulically or electrically released) is mandatory for any application where the driven load must be held statically when power is removed.

For construction crane and offshore applications, a parking brake sized to hold 125% of the maximum static load torque is typically required by the applicable classification society.
